Knowledge Nexus
Tartu Downtown Cultural Centre
Knowledge Nexus is a landscape-integrated cultural centre in Tartu combining a library, museum, and event spaces within a vibrant public park setting. The project creates a cohesive civic destination that enhances biodiversity, accessibility, and the connection between the city and the Emajõgi river. Shaped by a strong relationship between architecture and landscape, the design minimises its above-ground presence to preserve and extend the park, while carving out layered public spaces that invite exploration and interaction. Through this integration, the cultural centre becomes an extension of the city itself—supporting community life, cultural exchange, and a continuous dialogue between nature and the urban environment.

Knowledge Nexus is a forward-looking cultural centre by WOMO Architects that brings together a public library, art museum, and event spaces into a unified civic destination in downtown Tartu. Located within the city’s central park and along the Emajõgi river, the project is designed as a landscape-driven intervention that enhances biodiversity, accessibility, and public life.
Rather than dominating the site, the architecture minimises its above-ground footprint to preserve and expand the park. A layered “triple-ground” strategy carves the landscape to create multiple levels of access, allowing the building to integrate seamlessly with its surroundings while maximising daylight into lower levels through sunken gardens and courtyards.
The programme is carefully distributed to support both independence and overlap between cultural functions. The library, café, and youth centre occupy an L-shaped volume above ground, oriented toward the river and open park. Below, the museum and event spaces are embedded within the الأرض, where controlled lighting conditions are balanced with natural daylight introduced through landscaped voids.
At the heart of the project, a central courtyard and interconnected circulation routes create a cohesive spatial experience, linking exhibitions, performances, and educational activities. Flexible spaces allow for diverse programming, enabling the building to operate continuously and adapt to different audiences and events throughout the day and night.
The design reinforces connections to the historic city centre by aligning with existing urban traces, including the reactivation of Kauba Street as a pedestrian route through the park to the riverfront. Ground-level porticoes and open edges enhance permeability, while terraces, outdoor reading areas, and public amenities extend cultural activity into the landscape.
Sustainability is embedded in both form and strategy. By reducing built volume above grade and preserving existing trees, the project lowers its carbon footprint while strengthening ecological value. The integration of architecture and landscape creates a resilient, people-focused environment that supports community engagement and cultural exchange.
Knowledge Nexus redefines the role of a cultural institution—not as a standalone object, but as an extension of the city itself, where learning, art, and public life converge within a shared landscape.

Smart Building Envelope
The facade is optimised to provide maximum shielding from the sun during summer months while still allowing for views and ventilation.
Using a terracotta facade for the building provides several sustainability benefits. In terms of energy efficiency, terracotta has excellent thermal mass properties, meaning it can absorb and store heat from the sun during the day and release it at night, helping to regulate indoor temperatures and reducing the need for heating and cooling systems.
