A historic London establishment gets a signature look

Millennium Bridge House is a landmark adaptive reuse project in London, transforming a Thames-side office into a contemporary workplace with a new façade, active public ground floor, and rooftop destination. Situated at the foot of the Millennium Bridge, the building occupies a strategic position along the cultural axis between St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern, offering a significant opportunity to redefine its architectural presence and urban impact.

  • Millennium Bridge House – Reimagining a Landmark on the Thames

Millennium Bridge House is a transformative adaptive reuse project by WOMO Architects, redefining a prominent office building at the foot of the Millennium Bridge in London. Positioned along the key cultural and pedestrian axis linking St Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern, the project reimagines the building as a contemporary Class A office destination while enhancing its relationship to the Thames riverfront.

The proposal responds to the building’s strategic urban location and the need for comprehensive refurbishment by combining architectural renewal with improved performance and functionality. An inside-out design approach leverages the strengths of the existing structure and floor plates, reorganising internal layouts to create flexible, efficient, and future-ready workspaces.

At ground level, the design introduces a more open and permeable interface with the city. A new restaurant and enhanced public realm activate the base of the building, strengthening connections between the Thames Path, the riverwalk, and the surrounding urban fabric. Increased transparency and accessibility dissolve previous barriers, creating a more inclusive and animated riverside experience.

A key intervention is the recladding of the façade, establishing a refined architectural identity that responds to its iconic context. The new envelope improves daylight performance, frames expansive river views, and contributes to a cohesive civic frontage along the Thames. In dialogue with the Tate Modern opposite, the building forms part of a strengthened cultural landscape, balancing material robustness with transparency and rhythm.

At the upper levels, the project introduces a new public-facing dimension through the transformation of the roof into an event space and accessible terrace. This elevated landscape offers panoramic views across the Thames and South Bank, creating a shared civic destination that extends the building’s role beyond its commercial function.

By retaining and enhancing the existing structure, the project embraces principles of adaptive reuse and sustainability, reducing embodied carbon while upgrading the building to meet contemporary environmental and workplace standards.

Millennium Bridge House becomes more than a refurbishment—it is a strategic piece of urban regeneration that reinforces London’s riverfront identity, engages with its cultural surroundings, and contributes to a more vibrant, connected, and architecturally ambitious public realm.
