LA Redondo Offices – From Retail Anchor to Creative Workplace Hub
LA Redondo Offices is an adaptive reuse project that transforms a former Nordstrom department store in Los Angeles into a vibrant mixed-use destination combining co-working, residential, and retail spaces. The design reimagines the building’s large, inward-facing floor plates into a flexible and connected environment tailored to digital brands, tech education, and creative industries.
At the core of the transformation is the introduction of new atria and an internal courtyard, bringing natural daylight deep into the building and redefining the spatial experience. These interventions break down the scale of the original retail volume, creating a breathable, human-centered workplace that fosters collaboration, visibility, and interaction.
The façade is strategically opened with large window insertions, turning the former concrete box into a transparent and engaging structure that connects to the surrounding urban context. A redefined entrance establishes a clear identity, marking the building’s transition from traditional retail to a contemporary hub for work, learning, and innovation.
The project reflects a broader shift in urban development—reimagining underutilized retail buildings as dynamic mixed-use environments. By retaining the existing structure, the design preserves embodied carbon while introducing new programs that align with evolving patterns of work and city life.
Exposed concrete elements are maintained to anchor the building’s industrial character, contrasting with the newly introduced light-filled spaces and refined interventions. At ground level, retail and commercial functions are reorganized to enhance circulation, activate the street edge, and strengthen connections to the public realm.
LA Redondo Offices demonstrates the potential of adaptive reuse as a strategy for sustainable urban regeneration—transforming obsolete infrastructure into a flexible, future-ready destination that supports creativity, community, and economic growth.
