Gouda Residence
Creating Neighbourhoods with Future Value
The proposal for a new residential mid-rise in Gouda envisions a contemporary, amenity-rich living environment defined by an upcycled brick and timber façade that reflects both sustainability and local character. Situated within an established neighborhood close to schools, civic amenities, and everyday services, the project is designed to integrate seamlessly into its surroundings while enhancing the quality of urban living. Organized around a central courtyard, the development prioritizes community by creating a sheltered, green heart that encourages interaction among residents, while clear circulation routes and easily accessible parking support convenience and ease of movement. The result is a cohesive residential environment that balances privacy with social connection, offering a modern interpretation of neighborhood living rooted in Gouda’s urban fabric.

Gouda Residence – Creating Neighbourhoods with Future Value
Gouda Residence is a contemporary mid-rise housing development that transforms a former car park into a vibrant, community-focused residential environment. Located within an established neighbourhood in Gouda, the project integrates seamlessly into its surroundings while introducing a sustainable and future-oriented approach to urban living.
The design is organised around a central courtyard, forming a green and sheltered heart that encourages interaction among residents while maintaining a sense of privacy. This courtyard typology supports efficient layouts and high-quality living conditions, with dual-aspect apartments benefiting from optimal daylight, natural ventilation, and strong visual connections to shared outdoor spaces.
The building massing responds carefully to its context, stepping down toward the nearby river to create terraces that enhance views, sunlight, and microclimate. This configuration opens the courtyard to the southwest, maximising solar access and reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape.
Materiality plays a key role in expressing both sustainability and local identity. The façade is composed of upcycled brick combined with timber elements, creating a tactile and durable exterior that reflects Gouda’s architectural character. Integrated loggias and balconies respond to environmental conditions, providing acoustic buffering, shading, and varied outdoor living spaces across different orientations.
Community and shared amenities are embedded throughout the project. The stepped terraces host gardens, seating areas, and recreational spaces, while the raised courtyard—accessible to the public—acts as a social hub that can accommodate local initiatives and events. Carefully positioned voids and visual connections break down the scale of the building, fostering openness and connectivity.
Sustainability is central to the design, with strategies including modular construction, biodiversity-enhancing planting, and photovoltaic panels that reduce operational energy demand. The integration of timber within the courtyard introduces warmth and supports a lower-carbon construction approach.
Gouda Residence demonstrates how underutilised urban sites can be transformed into inclusive, resilient neighbourhoods—balancing density with liveability, and creating lasting value for both residents and the wider community.
